The children of Loseley Fields win prestigious international Science competition, 2024
Run by the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Imperial College London the competition was open to teams of young people of primary and secondary ages from schools, community and youth groups across the world. The purpose of the competition is to motivate young people to engage with science, to encourage them to work together as part of a team and to engage them in a fun activity that is motivated by their curiosity and drive.
Teams were asked to develop a new and innovative scientific solution to help achieve one of the United Nation’s Global Goals for Sustainable Development. To enter, teams had to create 5-minute film that outlines the goal they have selected which describes their innovative solution, explains the science behind their idea and illustrates how their idea would address the goal.
This year there was over 260 entries, with 60 in our primary phase. Following the submission of their video, our children were shortlisted to the final three and on Wednesday 17th April they went up to Imperial College London to present their idea to a panel of judges. Our entry was called Power to the People and aimed to tackle UN goal number 11 by forming a community solution to the climate crisis we are currently facing. We are thrilled to announce that our children were chosen as winners and proudly returned to school with a very large trophy!
Congratulations to the children involved and to Mrs Davies for supporting them so inspirationally with their ideas and application.
Sustainability Day Part 2
Summer 2023
We returned to ZERO Guildford for another Doughnut Economics workshop aimed at our younger pupils in Years 5 & 6. Students learnt about the "doughnut" model, visualising a space between the social foundation (meeting basic human needs) and planetary boundaries (environmental limits), empowering them to think about the bigger picture and how they can contribute to a better world as they grow up.We explored how we can make sure everyone has what they need to live a good life without using up all of Earth's resources.
Sustainability Day 8 March 2023
70 Year 11 & 12’s from 10 of our partner schools met at Zero Guildford to share their ideas and thoughts on Sustainability. From sharing ‘one idea’ from their school’s sustainability plan, to understanding the remit of ZERO, to participating in a Doughnut Economics workshop the day was highly collaborative and encouraged students to work cross-school. We are incredibly grateful to ZERO Guildford for hosting the day and for running sessions throughout it.
Literacy Day 11 October 2022
Over 1500 students from 18 of our partner school joined as at GLive for our launch day on 11th October 2023. We were delighted to have the spoken word artist Christian Foley join us. Christian’s improvised performances have received critical acclaim. His freestyle approach has taken him from the school classroom to PMQs, from the festival circuit to TED talks and the Premier League. He spoke with the students about community, connection and, despite their large number, introduced them to each other.
